Day of Service

Ryan and I have been trying to teach the kids service for others and what that really means. A week ago Monday, we had a family home evening lesson on service and challenged the kids to find ways to serve. As part of that home evening, we found a service project for our whole family to participate in. We joined forces with an organization entitled Feed the Poor. They asked us to do a bottled water drive for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. I thought this would be a perfect thing for our boys. I sent out emails to our ward family and our own families and asked everyone to donate water(leave it out on their porch), our goal was 1000 bottles.

Saturday arrived and it was time to collect all the water. The kids walked around the neighborhood and knocked on almost every door and would ask for donations. We were way proud of them. They would also get so excited when we would come up to a home that had already left their water donation on their porch. I was so nervous that we wouldn't make our goal, but we loaded up our van with so much water that the dang car was low riding. We were able to make our goal and we are so grateful to everyone who was willing to donate! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! Not only because it taught our boys service, but because we helped the victims of Haiti. So often I think, I wish I could help, but I am just one, what could I possibly do? For once I finally felt like I did something to help, instead of just wishing I could help.
